The Central Okanagan Regional Emergency Program advises a High Streamflow Advisory has now ended.  It was issued last Thursday by the BC River Forecast Centre for the Mission Creek and other small watersheds in the Central Okanagan.


Even though the advisory has ended, until the spring snowmelt and runoff is complete, the Regional District of Central Okanagan Emergency Program encourages all property owners adjacent to and in low lying areas of Mission Creek and other Central Okanagan water bodies to take appropriate measures to protect their property and to make an emergency plan in the event any possible flooding occurs due to weather conditions.

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory affecting the Mission Creek and other small watersheds in the Central Okanagan.


The snowpack has been melting rapidly with this week’s warmer temperatures and is expected to combine with moderate to heavy amounts of rain (10 to 50 millimeters) through the region into the Victoria Day long weekend, Central Okanagan creeks are expected to see increased flows and rising levels.  The Centre says depending on rainfall amounts, flows on Mission Creek may approach or exceed the two year flow level and smaller watercourses may see localized issues.


A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.  Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

The Central Okanagan Regional Emergency Program advises a High Streamflow Advisory issued Sunday by the BC River Forecast Centre for the Mission Creek and other watersheds east of Kelowna to Vernon, has now ended.



The Centre says rainfall has ended through the South Interior and river levels have eased from last week’s high snow melt and precipitation.



Even though the advisory has ended, until the spring snowmelt and runoff is complete, the Regional District of Central Okanagan Emergency Program continues to encourage all property owners adjacent to and in low lying areas of Mission Creek and other Central Okanagan water bodies to take appropriate measures to protect their property and to make an emergency plan in the event any possible flooding occurs due to weather conditions.

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory affecting the Mission Creek and other small to medium watersheds in the Okanagan.  This includes areas east of Kelowna to Vernon

The snowpack has been melting since the warm spell late last week and with a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada forecasting from 15 to 25 millimeters of rain into tomorrow (Monday), Central Okanagan creeks are expected to keep rising, as a result of this additional forecasts rainfall

A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.  Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

The advisory means that with significant rains yesterday and more rain in the forecast into tomorrow, river levels are rising or are expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.  Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible in the Central Okanagan.

The higher elevation snowpack has been melting rapidly since the start of this current warm spell late last week and with Environment Canada forecasting increased temperatures through the end of the week, Central Okanagan creeks are expected to keep rising, reaching their highest level late Friday or Saturday.

With more localized thundershower activity today in the Central Okanagan and possible heavy rains over the Mission Creek watershed, the BC River Forecast Centre has added a High Streamflow Advisory for Mission Creek.



This could result once again in minor flooding in low lying areas and rapid rises in creek levels and flows.



Local crews continue to monitor the status of Mission Creek and other area creeks in light of the isolated thundershowers
